The Summer of 2012 is going down as a scorcher. Many parts of the country are dealing with record heat and lots and lots of sun. That means the job of protecting your skin from sunburn and sun damage has never been more important. Here are our top 5 tips for protecting your skin in the summer.
Summer Skin Care: Use Sunscreen
It should go without saying that you need to use sunscreen to protect your skin from sun damage – but nearly half of men and nearly 30 percent of women say they have not used sunscreen in the past 12 months. That’s according to a recent survey from The Skin Cancer Foundation. If you need to be out in the sun, covering up with lightweight clothes for protection and using sunscreen are the best ways to protect your skin from burning. If you feel yourself burning – get yourself into the shade.
Summer Skin Care: Check the UV Index
When it’s sunny outside you know you need to protect your skin, but did you know that certain days are worse for your skin than others? That’s where the UV index come in and it’s a good thing to monitor beyond the basic forecast when you’re trying to protect your skin. The UV index gives you a number between zero and 10. Zero means you have a low risk of sun exposure and 10 means there’s a very high risk for exposure to damaging UV rays that day. You can find information about the UV index online.
Summer Skin Care: Stay Hydrated
Your skin is your largest organ – and it needs to be hydrated! Drinking enough water and other fluids in the summer is a big part of keeping your skin healthy too. Your skin will feel flaky and scaly if you’re in the sun too long because the sun will zap moisture from your skin. If you feel like lotions and moisturizers aren’t making your skin feel better – think about moisturizing from the inside of your body. If you have a hard time drinking enough water every day, reach for foods that have a high water content like cucumbers, watermelon and cantaloupe.
Summer Skin Care: Protect Your Lips
Chances are you don’t want to slather your mouth with sunscreen. Thank goodness for lip balm and lipstick that have sunscreens in them! Look for balm that has an SPF of 30 or higher and keep applying it when your outside. The key is that SPF – anything that’s below 30 isn’t going to be as effective as you want it to be to protect your skin.
If you do get burned – it’s time to treat your skin with a little TLC. Aloe works wonders to moisturize and soothe burned skin. Eniva’s natural Nourishing Face and Body Spray is great for sunburn as well – just apply it several times a day to cool and soothe your skin. It will help your skin keep from peeling. Our Rejuvenate Therapy Cream also gets rave reviews from customers as a natural way to soothe sunburn and even bug bites. Do you have a really severe sunburn?
