Hello Wellness Enthusiast,
As February comes to a close, We celebrate our hearts one last time and take a closer look at how to support this amazing organ and the cardiovascular system around it. The human heart is your “life” muscle. It is an amazing organ which provides the mechanical force needed to pump your blood over miles of vessels to deliver life-giving nutrients and oxygen.
- Your heart beats about 100,000 times a day and about 35 million times a year. During an average lifetime, the human heart will beat more than 2.5 billion times—and it never takes a break!
- Your heart pumps about 1 million barrels of blood during an average lifetime—that’s enough to fill more than 3 supertanker boats!
- Your body has about 5.6 liters (6 quarts) of blood. In one day, the blood travels approximately 12,000 miles through the multitude of vessels in your body—that’s about four times the distance across the U.S. from coast to coast!
And realizing the average heart is about the size your fist, the above statistics are even more amazing! Unfortunately, our hard working heart is also vulnerable to disease and negative impacts from unhealthy lifestyle choices. Consider these stats from the American Heart Association regarding the toll cardiovascular disease takes on Americans.
American Heart Association & US CDC Recent Heart Statistics:
- Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in the United States, responsible for about 900,000 deaths per year.
- CVD includes coronary heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, blood vessel disease, heart failure and other CVD disease states.
- One person dies approximately every 33 seconds from cardiovascular disease in the US.
- Approximately 20% of all heart disease (CVD) deaths are in people under age 65.
- An estimated 80% of cardiovascular disease deaths are preventable through lifestyle and health interventions.
- Not smoking. Please, this is like an internal hurricane with 100’s of unhealthy chemicals in every puff and a major contributor to heart disease and blood vessel inflammation.
- Stay active everyday. Each week, adults need 150 minutes of moderate to intense physical activity where their heart rate goes up and they break a sweat. Try 30 minutes x 5 days. The other 2 days of the week, it’s recommended to focus on muscle strengthening activity (current Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans).
- A healthy weight— A body mass index of 18.5 to 24.9. Check your weight weekly at the same time and keep track of changes. If someone has heart failure, individuals should check their weight every day.
- Healthy eating and appropriate supplementation. More veggies always helps. Reduce simple carbs and sugars in the diet.
- Alcohol in moderation and in low amounts. Updated research has shown alcohol simply isn’t healthy for the body, mind or heart. Period. If someone does drink, recommendations are to do so in low amounts at 1 drink daily for women and no more than 2 daily for men. This amount is to avoid harm, but there is no overall benefit to physical health from drinking.
- Annual screening and health check-ups. Specific focus on healthy blood pressure, weight, lipid levels and lifestyle habits.
Research studies have suggested that if implemented, the above list could cut the risk of development of heart disease or death from a cardiac cause by 40-80%. That’s nothing short of amazing – just like your heart!
