Whether it’s a picnic with friends, watching the kids’ soccer practices, gardening in the backyard under the hot sun, or walking around the lake, you may not always have a water bottle by your side. Dehydration can be a problem year-round, but once the sun is stronger and the temperature begins to rise, it is extremely important to keep your body hydrated.

Water is a key component of your body, making up approximately 60% of its composition and weight. When exercising, your body heats up, often releasing sweat. When you sweat a lot, your body’s water level is lowered, ultimately slowing your body down.

People can start to feel thirsty after losing only 2 to 3% of their body’s water. A headache is one of the first signs you may not be hydrated enough. Additionally, the combination of feeling lethargic, dizzy, nauseous or having a low appetite are all general signs of dehydration. It is recommended that adults drink at least 2 liters of water a day, more if you exercise regularly. An easy rule of thumb is to take your weight in pounds, and divide it by two. The result is the amount of ounces you should drink in a day.

Keeping your body hydrated is vital, so make sure you’re drinking water throughout the day, and especially before and after any physical activity. Be careful with the types of other beverages or liquids you consume. Stay away from alcohol, caffeine (coffee, tea, cocoa), or high-sugar sodas and juices, as they tend to draw out water from the body. Even milk is not a proper hydrator – it is a food, and not intended to replace the water your body needs. So, what’s the solution?
